Blue cloth binding. xvii, 411pp. Illustrated with b/w photo plates, plus 1 colour plate. 8vo (standard sized book). This is quite a heavy item weighing over 1kg with packaging. CONDITION: Very Good to Good (see table below for details). Minor board and spine edgewear. Small bumps to boards. Small clipping pasted to front endpaper. Ex-library, with ink stamp to verso of title page, and to p411. A little sunning to pages, otherwise in nice internal condition. *Photo(s) given of actual book. CONTENTS: An important medical work from William Sampson Handley (1872-1962), who advanced the theory that in mammary cancer, metastasis are due to extension along lymphatic vessels - "lymphatic permeation" - and not to dissemination by way of the blood stream. This work is a second edition (the first was published in 1906). Chapters include: The inadequacy of the embolic theory; the routes of lymphatic dissemination in the parieties; visceral dissemination; natural processes of repair in carcinoma; anatomy of the breast and its lymphatic gland; the principles of the operation for breast cancer; a method for the operative extirpation of breast cancer; radium in the treatment of breast cancer; lymphangioplasty; Paget's disease of the nipple. The text is supplemented by numerous photographic and microscopic plates (one folding), plus a single colour plate. There are a few small bumps to the binding, but internally the work is in solid condition. This copy is inscribed by the author at the front endpaper to Sir H.H. Dale (it is dated 1958). Sir Henry Hallett Dale (1875-1968) was an English neuroscientist.
